International Antarctic Expedition 2015
I am embarking on the International Antarctic Expedition 2015 (IAE 2015) lead by the organization 2041.
I've been dreaming about going on the expedition for several years. When I was 12, I read Robert Swan's book, "2041" (read more about Rob below). Shortly after, I had the good fortune of seeing one of his inspiring presentations. After the presentation, I talked to him and he offered to take me on an expedition when I was older and more prepared.
To track my journey during the expedition, you can see my blog posts, the ship tracker, or 2041's blog. When I return, I plan to give presentations at schools, and continue to inform and educate young people about climate issues. I am also participating in fellow expedition member Yan Zhang's documentary to "inspire youth action towards climate change." If our generation doesn't do this, who will?
IAE 2015 will comprise of over 75 people from 23 countries. The expedition features Rob's Leadership on the Edge Program, which prepares participants to effectively create change. During the expedition, we will witness the effects of climate change firsthand while learning from a group of experts.
2041 was founded by Robert Swan, OBE, BA, FRGS, the first person to walk unsupported to both the North and South Poles.
Rob was inspired by polar explorer Scott Amundsen at an early age, and was determined to recreate Scott's expedition. Rob is also the protege of Jacques Cousteau, esteemed marine biologist and conservationist. When Rob embarked on his first expedition to Antarctica, he promised Cousteau that he wouldn't leave any waste behind. Despite the challenges, he kept his promise.
After his Antarctic expedition, Rob embarked on another, this time to the North Pole. He then participated in the Earth Summit and World Summit, and went on to found 2041. Not only is he a very inspiring motivational speaker, but he practices what he preaches, carrying out his "Think Global, Act Local" campaign across the world.
